Electrical Work in Doncaster

Doncaster is largely a 1960s and 70s suburb that is being rebuilt around itself. The original brick veneer homes sit on big elevated blocks, and a great many of them are now either being extended upwards, renovated heavily, or replaced outright with large two-storey houses. Whichever of those is happening, the electrical system is almost always the part that has to catch up.

An untouched Doncaster home of that era typically runs a handful of circuits, rewireable fuses, no RCDs and power points installed for a very different way of living. Add a modern kitchen, ducted air conditioning, a second storey and an EV in the garage, and the original board is simply not in the same conversation. A rewire with a properly sized switchboard and mains is the job we do most here, and it is nearly always worth doing while the house is already open.

The topography gives Doncaster one genuine advantage: elevated blocks with good roof orientation make it strong territory for solar, and with heat pump hot water and an EV charger in the mix the numbers can stack up well. The catch is that all three land on the same switchboard, so it is worth planning them together rather than bolting each one on separately and paying for the same board work three times.

What We Do Most in Doncaster

Being Straight About Where We Are

We are based in Newport, which is about thirty-five to forty minutes from Doncaster depending on the freeway and the time of day. We are straight with people about that. For planned work — a rewire, a switchboard, a renovation fit-out, lighting, an EV charger — the drive makes no practical difference to you, and we come out for jobs of any size. What we will not do is promise to be at your door in twenty minutes at midnight, because we cannot, and we would rather say so now than have you waiting.

Doncaster is a real drive from Newport and we will not pretend otherwise. On a rewire, a renovation fit-out or a solar and EV installation we are on site long enough that it makes no difference to you. For a fifteen-minute repair, someone local is the better call.

The other thing worth knowing is that we quote one number after looking at the board and the supply, not a cheap figure over the phone followed by a variation once the wall is open. On older homes especially, what is behind the plaster changes the job — and we would rather find that out before you have committed than after. Ring 0418 583 097 and we will give you a realistic answer about timing and cost.

Doncaster — Common Questions

Do you travel to Doncaster?

Yes, for planned work of any size. We are based in Newport, roughly thirty-five to forty minutes away. On a rewire or a fit-out the drive is our problem, not yours. We do not promise fast emergency response this far east and we would rather be honest about it than let you down.

Should we do solar, a heat pump and an EV charger at the same time?

If you are considering all three, plan them together. Each one lands on the switchboard, and doing them separately often means paying for board and supply work more than once. A single assessment covering all three usually saves real money.

Our 1970s home has never been rewired. Is it dangerous?

Not necessarily, but it is well behind current standards — typically rewireable fuses, no earth-leakage protection and far too few circuits. The wiring itself may still be serviceable. We assess it honestly and tell you whether you need a full rewire or a switchboard upgrade and some new circuits, which is a much smaller job.

We are adding a second storey. When do you need to be involved?

At design stage. A second storey usually means new circuits, a relocated or replaced board and often a mains upgrade, and all of that is far cheaper to allow for in the plans than to retrofit. We are used to working alongside builders on this kind of project.

Is our roof suitable for solar?

Doncaster generally does well on this — elevated blocks and decent orientation. The determining factors are roof pitch, aspect, shading and the state of your switchboard. We look at all four before quoting rather than promising a figure sight unseen.

Can you upgrade the switchboard without rewiring the whole house?

Often yes. If the existing wiring is sound, a new board with RCBOs delivers most of the safety benefit on its own. We will tell you plainly which situation you are in — we have no interest in selling a rewire to someone who does not need one.
