Power Point (GPO) Installation in Melbourne
Nobody has enough power points. Homes built before the 2000s were wired for a fraction of the devices we plug in now, which is why so many houses run on double adaptors and extension leads snaking across the floor. Adding proper outlets is a small job that removes a genuine fire risk and makes a house work the way you actually live in it.
Adding new power points
Where a new point can go depends on what's behind the wall and whether there's an existing circuit nearby to pick up. In a home with roof access and plaster walls it's usually straightforward. In a double-brick period home with no roof cavity above, it takes more work — which is why an honest price means looking at the wall rather than quoting blind.
Replacing tired old outlets
Old power points yellow, crack, and eventually stop gripping the plug properly. A loose outlet arcs, and arcing starts fires. Swapping the fittings across a whole house is quick when it's done in one visit and it immediately makes the place feel newer.
We did exactly this on a home in West Footscray — new GPOs, switches, a fan and fresh lighting throughout. See the before and after.
USB outlets and modern fittings
USB-integrated power points are one of those small upgrades that people love more than they expect. No more chargers hogging the outlet. Worth doing in bedrooms, the kitchen bench and beside the couch while we're already there.
Outdoor and weatherproof points
An outdoor power point needs a weatherproof enclosure and RCD protection — this is not a place to cut corners, because an outlet exposed to rain is a genuine hazard. Done properly, it means you can run the mower, the pressure washer, or the Christmas lights without a lead running out through a window.

Can I add a power point myself?
No. In Victoria, all electrical work must be carried out by a licensed electrician, and you should receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety. It's not just a legal issue — DIY power point work is a common cause of house fires.
Is it cheaper to add several power points at once?
Considerably. Most of the cost of a small job is getting the electrician to your place and doing the testing and certification. Once we're there, each additional point costs a lot less. Save your small jobs up and do them in one hit.
Can you put a power point outside?
Yes, in a weatherproof enclosure with RCD protection. It's a very common request and it means no more extension leads running out the window.
My power point is warm or sparking. Is that bad?
Yes — stop using it and call us. A warm or arcing outlet is a fire risk and needs looking at promptly.
