Switchboard upgrades are the most common job we do, and the most common reason people put one off is that the board is still working. Which is fair — right up until it is not, or until it stops you doing something else you want to do.
Here is how to tell whether yours genuinely needs replacing, and how to tell the difference between a board that is merely old and one that is a problem.
1. Ceramic rewireable fuses
The porcelain carriers you pull out and rewire by hand with fuse wire. They do work, in the sense that the wire eventually melts and breaks the circuit. What they do not do is protect a person — and there is no way to add that protection to a board built around them.
If your board is a fuse board, it almost certainly predates 1980 and it has no RCDs anywhere. That is the clearest single indicator.
2. No safety switches at all
Look at your board. A safety switch — an RCD — has a small TEST button on it. A plain circuit breaker does not. If nothing on your board has a TEST button, nothing in your house is protecting a person from an electric shock.
This is worth being precise about, because it is the most misunderstood thing in a domestic switchboard: a circuit breaker protects the wiring in your walls. An RCD protects you. Having a board full of modern-looking breakers does not mean you have safety switches.
3. The board is full
This is the one that usually forces the decision. Every addition over the years — a circuit for the extension, the shed, the air conditioner, a hot water changeover — takes another way. Eventually there is nowhere to land a new circuit, and everything you want to do next gets quoted as impossible until the board is replaced.
If an electrician has told you there is no room for a new circuit, that is what they mean.
4. A dark backing panel behind the switchgear
Dark brown or black panels in boards from roughly the 1950s to the mid-1980s are commonly asbestos-containing — usually a product called Zelemite. Do not drill it, cut it or sand it. It is safe while undisturbed and it needs licensed removal as part of any upgrade.

5. Nuisance tripping you cannot explain
An old board cannot tell you much. Modern boards separate circuits properly, so when something trips you know where the problem is. If your board trips and takes out half the house with no clue as to why, part of what you are buying with an upgrade is diagnosability.
Worth separating two things though: a board that trips under load is usually an overload problem, and a board that trips randomly is usually a fault. We cover the difference in why your safety switch keeps tripping.
6. You are adding solar, a battery or an EV charger
All three need space on the board and a compliant installation to connect to. It is extremely common for a solar or EV quote to be held up by switchboard work nobody costed, and the sensible order is to have the board assessed before you sign a contract for the other thing.
That is not an upsell — it is the sequence that stops you paying for a booked installation that cannot proceed.
7. You are renovating
A new kitchen with an induction cooktop, ducted heating and cooling, a second storey — each adds substantial load. Getting the board and the consumer mains assessed at design stage costs nothing and avoids your builder discovering mid-project that the plans assume capacity you do not have.
8. The property is rented
Victoria's rental minimum standards require RCD protection, and older boards frequently have none and no room to add any. For landlords that usually means the board rather than a bolt-on. See our rental compliance guide.
What an upgrade actually involves
The old board comes out and a modern enclosure goes in, with a circuit breaker and an RCD protecting every circuit, all of them labelled so the next person can read them. In older properties the consumer mains and main earth often have to be replaced at the same time, because the incoming cable was sized for a much smaller household. If the backing board is asbestos it is removed under licence.
Most domestic upgrades are a single day on site, and your power will be off for a good part of it. If the distributor has to attend to pull the service fuse, that adds time nobody fully controls — a good electrician tells you that upfront rather than on the morning.

How long will my power be off?

Can I just add a safety switch to my existing board?
Sometimes, if the board is reasonably modern and has spare space. On a ceramic fuse board, no — there is nowhere to fit one, and the board is the reason you have no protection in the first place.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade before installing an EV charger?
Often, yes. An EV charger needs its own dedicated circuit and many older boards have no space or capacity. Have the board assessed before signing an EV charger contract, not after.
Is my old switchboard dangerous?
Old is not the same as dangerous. A board with ceramic fuses and no RCDs is not going to spontaneously fail, but it offers no protection to a person and it limits what you can add. The genuine warning signs are scorch marks, a burning smell, heat, or repeated tripping.
How long does a switchboard last?
Decades. Most boards get replaced because they are full, non-compliant for a new purpose, or lack RCD protection, rather than because the switchgear has worn out.
