Newport grew up around the railway workshops, and the housing tells that story in layers. There are Victorian and Edwardian workers' cottages close to the station, a thick band of 1920s and 1930s California bungalows through the middle of the suburb, and post-war brick veneer out towards Newport Lakes. Each of those eras came with its own switchboard, and in a lot of houses that original board is still the one doing the work.

Being local matters more on this job than most. A switchboard upgrade means your power is off for a good part of the day, and if something unexpected turns up behind the panel — which it does — we're not driving across town for a part. What we usually find in Newport boards

The bungalows almost always have ceramic rewireable fuses — the porcelain carriers you pull out and rewire by hand with fuse wire. What the upgrade actually involves

The old board comes out and a modern enclosure goes in, with a circuit breaker and an RCD protecting every circuit, and every one of them labelled so the next person can read it. In older properties the consumer mains and the main earth often have to be replaced at the same time, because the incoming cable was sized for a house with a stove, a fridge and a few lights. If the backing board is asbestos it has to be removed and disposed of properly, which is a licensed job in its own right and not something to cut corners on. Most domestic upgrades are a single day on site. What usually triggers it in Newport

Most Newport upgrades come off the back of something else. A rear extension or a second storey means new circuits and there's no space. A ducted heating or cooling system goes in and the load is beyond what the board and mains were built for. Solar gets quoted and the installer says the board needs doing first — which is usually correct, not a sales tactic.

The other half are safety-driven: no RCDs anywhere on the board, a nuisance trip nobody can explain, or a conveyancer's inspection during a sale.
