And never keep resetting a switch that trips repeatedly. It is tripping for a reason, and forcing it back on is how a fault becomes a fire.
A safety switch tripping once is usually a faulty appliance. Tripping repeatedly means something is genuinely wrong, and the good news is that you can often narrow it down yourself in about ten minutes before you call anyone.
First: is it a safety switch or a circuit breaker?
These do different jobs and people mix them up constantly.
- A circuit breaker protects the wiring in your walls from overload. It trips when a circuit draws more current than it should — too many things at once, or a short.
- A safety switch (RCD) protects you. It watches for current leaking to earth — through a faulty appliance, damp insulation, or a person — and cuts power in milliseconds. It has a TEST button on it; a plain circuit breaker does not.
That distinction matters, because it tells you what kind of problem you have. A breaker tripping usually means too much load. An RCD tripping usually means current is escaping somewhere it should not — which is a very different conversation.
The ten-minute test: find the appliance
Most repeated tripping traces to one faulty appliance. Here is how to find it.
- Unplug everything on the affected circuit — appliances, chargers, lamps, the lot. In practice this often means most of the house.
- Reset the safety switch. If it will not reset even with everything unplugged, stop here and call an electrician: the fault is in the wiring, not an appliance.
- If it does reset and holds, plug things back in one at a time, waiting a minute or two between each.
- When it trips, the last thing you plugged in is your culprit. Leave it unplugged.
- Worth repeating the test to confirm, because intermittent faults can fool you.
The usual suspects, in roughly the order we find them: kettles, toasters, washing machines, dishwashers, old fridges and freezers, iron, hot water systems, and anything that lives outside or in a damp spot.
Why it trips when it rains
This is one of the most common patterns we see in older Melbourne homes, and it is the one people most often ignore because it appears to resolve itself.
Water is reaching a connection it should not. That might be a corroded outdoor power point, an external light fitting whose seal has failed, a damaged cable, or — in older houses — cable whose rubber insulation has perished and no longer keeps moisture out. Current leaks to earth, the RCD does exactly what it is supposed to do, and it trips.
Then it dries out, and it holds again. It has not fixed itself. It has dried out, and it will be back with the next weather. Other common causes
Too many circuits on one safety switch
Older boards sometimes have a single RCD covering most of the house. Every appliance leaks a tiny amount of current to earth — that is normal — but enough of them on one device adds up to a nuisance trip with no single thing at fault. The fix is more RCDs across fewer circuits, which is a switchboard job.
A failing safety switch
RCDs are mechanical devices and they do wear out, usually becoming over-sensitive rather than failing to trip. If yours is decades old, that is a real possibility — but it should be the last conclusion, not the first. Assuming the device is faulty when there is a genuine wiring problem is exactly the wrong way round.
Neutral and earth touching somewhere
A neutral conductor making contact with earth anywhere in the installation will trip an RCD. This is a wiring fault, often the result of damage or a poor connection made years ago, and it needs an electrician with a tester rather than a process of elimination.
A genuinely dangerous fault
Sometimes the RCD is doing precisely what you paid for and there is a real fault. That is the point of the device. It is worth remembering that a circuit breaker protects your wiring, but an RCD protects the person holding the faulty appliance — so when it trips, it may have just done its job.
When to stop and call
- It will not reset even with everything unplugged.
- Any burning smell, sparking, scorch marks, or an outlet or switch hot to touch — immediately, and turn off at the main switch.
- It trips at random with no pattern you can identify.
- You have found the appliance but you are not sure it is really the cause.
- It has started tripping much more often than it used to.
- Anyone in the house has felt a tingle from a tap, an appliance or a light fitting. Treat that as urgent.
Press the TEST button on each safety switch. It should trip immediately. If it does not, it is not protecting you and it needs replacing — a device that fails its own test is worse than no device, because you have been relying on it.
Reset it afterwards and check your clocks.
No safety switch at all?
A lot of older Melbourne boards have none. If your switchboard is full of ceramic rewireable fuses — the porcelain carriers you rewire by hand — there is no RCD protection anywhere in your home, and there is usually nowhere to fit one without replacing the board.

Two common causes: too many circuits sharing one RCD, where the normal tiny leakage of many appliances adds up to a nuisance trip, or an ageing RCD that has become over-sensitive. Both are switchboard-level fixes rather than appliance problems.
Do I legally need a safety switch in Victoria?
Requirements depend on the age of the installation and whether the property is rented. Rented properties must have RCD protection. For owner-occupied homes, modern wiring rules require RCDs on new and altered circuits — so an older home may legally have none while still being well worth upgrading.
